Charcuterie Board Calculator

Cured meats, cheese & bread per person for appetizers or a full meal

TL;DR

This charcuterie board calculator shows how much cured meat, cheese, bread and dip veggies to buy for your guests. Pick the occasion: an appetizer before dinner, heavy appetizers that replace dinner, or a board as the main meal. It starts from 1.8 oz (50 g) of meat and cheese per person for appetizers, and you can change every amount.

For a charcuterie board as an appetizer, plan 1.8 oz (50 g) of cured meats and 1.8 oz (50 g) of cheese per person, so 1.1 lb (500 g) of each for 10 guests, plus 1.8 oz (50 g) of bread or crackers. For heavy appetizers that replace dinner, plan 2.5 oz (70 g) of meat and 2.1 oz (60 g) of cheese; for a board as the main meal, 4.2 oz (120 g) of meat and 4.6 oz (130 g) of cheese. Children count as half a portion.

Common questions with concrete values

How much charcuterie per person?

Plan 1.8 oz (50 g) of cured meats and 1.8 oz (50 g) of cheese per person for an appetizer board, so 1.1 lb (500 g) of each for 10 guests. If the board replaces dinner, go up to 4.2 oz (120 g) of meat and 4.6 oz (130 g) of cheese per person, plus 3.5 oz (100 g) of bread or crackers.

How the charcuterie board calculator works

Enter the number of adults and children, then pick the occasion. The calculator multiplies the amount per person by your guest count; children count as half a portion, and every amount is rounded up in steps of 3.5 oz (100 g). It covers three occasions: an Appetizer before dinner; Heavy appetizers (replaces dinner), where the spread all but takes the place of a meal; and a Board as the main meal, for example at a wine-and-cheese night. Under “Adjust amounts” you can change every per-person value.

Amounts per person

  • Appetizer before dinner: 1.8 oz (50 g) cured meats, 1.8 oz (50 g) cheese, 1.8 oz (50 g) bread and at least 0.9 oz (25 g) veggies for dips. The bread and veggie amounts come from the per-person planning list of Inforama Bern, a Swiss training center, which puts cheese and dried meat combined at 1–3.5 oz (30–100 g).
  • Heavy appetizers (replaces dinner): 2.5 oz (70 g) cured meats, 2.1 oz (60 g) cheese, 2.8 oz (80 g) bread and 0.9 oz (25 g) veggies. French guides to the apéritif dînatoire recommend 1.8–2.5 oz (50–70 g) of charcuterie, 1.8–2.1 oz (50–60 g) of cheese and 2.8–3.5 oz (80–100 g) of bread; the total of 8.3 oz (235 g) falls within the 6.3–8.5 oz (180–240 g) that the Swiss caterer Confiserie Bachmann plans for an apéro riche.
  • Board as the main meal: 4.2 oz (120 g) cured meats, 4.6 oz (130 g) cheese and 3.5 oz (100 g) bread. Here the sources range from 5.3 oz (150 g) to more than 10.6 oz (300 g) per person; the calculator goes with the middle.

Mixing cured meats and cheese

A few different kinds make the board more interesting: prosciutto, salami, soppressata or capicola on the meat side, and on the cheese side something mild and something bold, such as a creamy brie and a sharp aged cheddar. Just split the total amount across the varieties. If there is already plenty of cheese, scale the meats back to the appetizer amount, and vice versa.

Shopping tips

  • Have the cured meats sliced fresh at the deli counter; pre-sliced packs dry out faster.
  • Take the cheese out of the fridge about half an hour before serving so it can develop its full flavor.
  • For the bread, baguette, breadsticks or crackers all work; nuts, grapes, olives and pickles round out the board.
  • Children count as half a portion; teens with big appetites are better entered as adults.
