It depends on engine size, fuel and CO₂ emissions: for cars first registered from July 2009 you pay €2 (petrol) or €9.50 (diesel) per started 100 cc plus a CO₂ charge for each g/km above the tax-free allowance (95 g/km since 2014), rounded down to full euros. A petrol car with 1,600 cc and 130 g/km first registered in 2021 costs €105 a year, the same car as a diesel €225.
