Random Number Generator

Random numbers in any range, with or without repeats, plus a dice roller and coin flip

TL;DR

Enter a minimum and maximum to get a random whole number; every value in the range is equally likely, so each number from 1 to 100 has a 1% chance. Draw up to 1,000 numbers with or without repeats, roll dice from d4 to d100 or flip a coin. The randomness comes from crypto.getRandomValues in your browser.

With two six-sided dice, 7 is the most likely total: 6 of 36 combinations, a probability of 16.67%. A total of 2 or 12 has a probability of only 2.78% each, and the chance of rolling 10 or more is 16.67%. The random number generator on this page gives every whole number in your range the same chance, so each number from 1 to 100 has a 1% chance.

Common questions with concrete values

How do I pick a random number between 1 and 100?

Enter 1 as the minimum and 100 as the maximum and select Generate. Both ends are included, and each of the 100 numbers has the same 1% chance.

Is this random number generator really random?

It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the cryptographically secure random generator built into your browser, with rejection sampling so every number in the range is equally likely. The results cannot be predicted in practice.

How do I generate random numbers without repeats?

Set how many numbers you need and tick No repeats. Each number then appears only once, so you can draw at most as many numbers as the range contains, for example 6 numbers from 1 to 49.

What is the most likely total with two dice?

7. Six of the 36 possible combinations add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2 and 6+1), a probability of 16.67%.

What does 2d6 mean?

It means rolling two six-sided dice and adding them up. The number before the d is the count of dice and the number after it is the number of sides, so 1d20 is one twenty-sided die.

How the random number generator works

Enter a minimum and a maximum, and the generator picks a whole number from that range, including both ends. Every number is equally likely: in a range from 1 to 100, each number has a 1% chance. The numbers come from your browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). To avoid bias, raw values that would make some numbers more likely are discarded and drawn again, a method called rejection sampling. Nothing is sent to a server.

Several numbers, with or without repeats

Set how many numbers you need, up to 1,000. With No repeats, each number appears at most once, like drawing numbered balls from a bag, so you cannot draw more numbers than the range contains. Without it, the same number can come up more than once, like rolling a die several times. Sort ascending puts the result in order, which helps with raffle tickets or random samples.

Dice roller

Roll up to 100 dice with 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20 or 100 sides. Dice are written as NdX, for example 2d6 for two six-sided dice or 1d20 for one twenty-sided die. The roller shows every die and the total. With two six-sided dice, 7 is the most common total: 6 of the 36 possible combinations add up to 7, a probability of 16.67%. Totals of 2 and 12 are the rarest, with one combination each (2.78%).

Coin flip

A fair coin flip has two outcomes with a 50% chance each. Flip once for a quick decision or many times to watch the share of heads move toward 50% as the number of flips grows. Every flip is independent: after five heads in a row, the next flip is still 50/50.

Common uses

  • Picking a winner for a giveaway or raffle
  • Choosing random participants, questions or samples
  • Board games and tabletop role-playing games
  • Deciding who goes first

The generator is not meant for official lottery draws or gambling, which require certified systems.
